Aims

This session aims to develop your skills in identifying primary and secondary headaches in primary care.

Objectives

  • Develop a structured approach to history taking in headache presentations in primary care.
  • Understand the acronym SNOOP10 in identifying reds flags.
  • Implement safe decision-making strategies to support you in recognising primary and secondary headaches.
  • Recognise the importance of monitoring and support for patients with chronic headaches.

Pre-Requisites

It is recommended that participants have a minimum of 2 years post qualifying experience.

What will i learn?

  • Identify and differentiate between primary headaches (such as migraines, tension-type headaches, and cluster headaches) and secondary headaches, understanding their pathophysiology and clinical presentations.
  • Perform comprehensive assessments, including taking detailed patient histories and conducting physical and neurological examinations, to accurately diagnose the type of headache.
  • Develop individualised management plans for patients with headaches, incorporating both pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments, tailored to the headache type, severity, frequency, and patient preferences.
  • Communicate effectively with patients about their diagnosis, treatment options, and prognosis, offering support and guidance to empower them in managing their condition.
  • Identify red flags and situations that necessitate referral or other specialist services for advanced management or investigation.
