Course description

This minor illness course is for advanced nurse practitioners, allied  healthcare practitioners and  independent non medical prescribers working towards advanced roles seeing and treating adults in primary care and community settings including general practice and walk in pharmacies. A case study approach is used to explore differential diagnoses, and pharmacological and non pharmacological interventions including safety netting and worsening care advice.

On completion of the Minor Illness Course, you will be able to assess patients with a range of minor illness conditions of the respiratory, abdominal, gastrointestinal, dermatology, ENT, eye conditions, gynae, sexual health, contraception and mental health presentations in urgent care, general practice, walk in centres and community settings.

 Pre Requisites

  • Be a registered healthcare professional with a minimum of 2years post qualifying experience.
  • Relevant workplace opportunities and organisational support with an identified mentor is encouraged to support completion of skills portfolio in clinical environment and improve competence after attending the minor illness course. *** This minor illness course is suitable for healthcare professionals new in the role with limited experience seeing and treating patients independently.

***Completion of this course does not award competence or the title of Advanced Practitioner. This is obtained with experience, mentorship and completion of relevant educational courses.

 Aims 
This  minor illness course is for nurse practitioners, pharmacists, advanced paramedics and allied healthcare professionals wishing to develop skills in clinical decision-making, identifying red flags and management of minor illness presentations in general practice, urgent care and walk-in centres.
 
 Learning Outcomes
 
  • Demonstrate knowledge of pathophysiology in management of minor illnesses.
  • Critically consider ethical and legal issues that influence decision-making in seeing and treating minor ailments and working in independent roles.
  • Reflect on risk management constraints when planning a safe discharge or referral to other agencies and members of the multidisciplinary team.
  • Develop skills in ensuring clinical practice is evidence based through engagement with local organisation policy and current health strategy in primary care.
  • Recognise importance of multi-professional working for effective and safe management of minor ailments 
  • *On completion, you are encouraged to complete the skills portfolio in your clinical environment supported by a mentor. You will develop skills   to assess patients with a variety of presenting complaints  and undertake assessment and treatment of minor illness conditions of the respiratory, abdominal and gastrointestinal systems, dermatology, ophthalmic, ENT, sexual health, musculoskeletal, mental health.

Her journey in this specialised field began during her GP registrar year, where she had the privilege of training under a doctor who specialised in family planning and women's health. During this period, Dr. Jenkins attained her DFSRH (Diploma of the Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare) and LOC (Letter of Competence) for coils and implants, laying the foundation for her expertise. As a partner in a larger training practice, Dr. Jenkins took the initiative to develop a weekly Family Planning clinic and became a Family Planning trainer, sharing her knowledge with fellow practitioners. Her commitment to advancing skills and knowledge in this domain is reflected in her collaboration with the local sexual health clinic, where she held roles as a Family Planning trainer.Dr. Jenkins, known in Milton Keynes as an expert in her field, went beyond the routine by securing a bid with her practice to establish a community gynae clinic. Dr. Ahmed Kazmi, an accomplished dermatologist with UK training and accreditation, earned his undergraduate degree in Medicine from the prestigious University of Birmingham in 2008. Nadia Dallsingh

Nadia Dallsingh, RGN, BSc, MSc, is an esteemed Cardiac Specialist Nurse Practitioner with a career spanning over thirty years in the National Health Service (NHS). Her passion for cardiology nursing has been the cornerstone of her journey since 1994, where she has dedicated herself to advancing patient care in various domains of cardiovascular health. Nadia's expertise lies in interventional cardiology, particularly in areas related to coronary artery disease, acute coronary syndrome, heart failure, and cardiac rehabilitation. Her extensive experience in the field has taken her through diverse roles, starting with nine years in cardiac critical care settings from 1994 to 2003. Subsequently, she transitioned into cardiac diagnostics, risk prevention/intervention, research, and cardiac rehabilitation, a phase that continued from 2003 to 2015. In her current role since January 2015, Nadia plays a pivotal role in screening and preparing patients for elective cardiac procedures. These encompass a wide range, including angiograms, percutaneous coronary interventions, transcatheter aortic valve interventions, cardiac ablations, pacemakers, and internal cardiac defibrillators. Kirsty Armstrong

Dr Rakesh Chopra

Dr Rakesh Chopra MS DNB FRCS MRCGP. Is a nationally recognised teacher of ENT in Primary Care. He is an ENT GPSI for the Bridgewater trust; He works in Cheshire and Merseyside. His ENT GPSI service is now in its 14th year.  He had nearly 14 years’ experience in hospital-based ENT prior to that. He has been extensively involved in the development and teaching of ENT in General Practice. His models and published pathways in ENT have gained wide appeal and are now used all over the country. He has conducted the annual ‘ENT in Primary Care’ course for the Mersey chapter of the RCGP for the last 10 years.  He is also the ENT tutor for Mediconf and Pulse Live. He has also been an ENT tutor for NB Medical ‘Hot topics’ group course. I was recently invited to teach at the GP retraining programme in West of Scotland.He has multiple international publications in ENT. He has been the referee for the ENT section of the Journal of the Royal Society for Promotion of Health. He also has a degree module in Allergy from the National Respiratory Training Centre. He has contributed articles for the Pulse and GP magazine and the BIDA journal. He has been invited to be the Chairperson for the RCGP, London, ENT ODE conference, this year for the third year running.Dr Chopra will be delivering a series of webinars on ENT conditions in primary care.

Varun Vijay Kumar

Dr Varun Kumar (MBBS (Lond), MBA(Lond)) is a doctor currently working in Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS trust. He graduated from Barts and the London medical school with a Distinction as well as an MBA from London. He currently sits as a Council Member for the Royal Society of Medicine, General practice and primary care Section. He was also previously an Associate for the NHS clinical Leaders Network, as well as a board member for RCGP Northeast London Faculty.   His interest lies in Dermatology, having done his elective at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, University of Sydney. He has also presented Internationally as well as locally and won awards for research done on community skin surgery as well as skin conditions in skin of colour. He also has an interest in medical technology, and has interned in Silicon Valley at Zeda, the world’s first Medifacturing company which pioneers integrated healthcare solutions using 3D printing and nano technologies. He is passionate about Primary care, Dermatology, technology and innovation in medicine.
